Your Second-Tier Shows

Only a week and a half until Lost comes back!

This has actually been a relatively painless break; the first eight episodes of the season were, as a whole, absurdly good. And I can't wait for Ben's flash-forward episode on April 24th.

But with the hiatus now in its fourth week, it's time to crack out the old "What else are you watching?" post.

Personally, I'm a big South Park fans and I'm loving the new episodes - especially the "Canada on Strike" episode. They had some things to say about the WGA strike that were controversial, for sure, but that's part of what makes South Park great. The other part involves scenes like this.

NBC's comedy lineup returned to Thursday nights last week, so it was nice to welcome 30 Rock back to the air. Hm, actually, those shows (The Office and Scrubs included) will make a nice lead-up to Lost's new 10 pm timeslot - better than Grey's Anatomy, that's for sure.

I also came across a cool article written by a big Lost fan in defense of the procedural show Bones. He writes:

As wonderful as it may be to have a show [like Lost] that inspires devotion and requires rapt attention, TV as a whole cannot live on a diet of intensity alone...The overall success of a broadcast lineup always depends on shows, for example, like Fox's returning Bones, an entertaining blend of crime and romantic comedy that sits comfortably near the top of TV's second tier.

I've seen Bones a number of times, and his assessment is spot-on: it's a pretty cool show, and it deserves more credit than it gets - but of course, it simply isn't designed to inspire the fervor that Lost does. What are some of your own "second tier" shows?
