Will FlashForward Replace Lost?

flashforward.jpg
Hey, everyone! Super-long-time no blog. My apologies. I think I was mourning the impending last season of Lost. Yes, it's exciting. And no, I don't really want to accept that it's ending. I'll deal. Don't worry.

I caught the premiere of FlashForward this week. I know what ABC's trying to do. They're trying to keep viewers like myself (and presumably like you, since you're reading a Lost blog) who, as of right now, schedule our lives around their Wednesday-night lineup. They don't want us walking away the moment we discover who and/or what the smoke monster is.

They attempted to keep our attention with Daybreak a while back. Epic fail. Here's the thing: we're not just into the sci-fi gimmicks of Lost. I'd watch without the frozen donkey wheel. Promise. If the series were merely an exploration of character, I'd still be riveted. That's what makes it worth watching. There's life, carefully crafted, weaving in and out of the supernatural jaw-dropping moments.

That said, I think FlashForward has a chance. Maybe. Exhibit A: Joseph Fiennes. Sigh. Exhibit B: The strategic casting of our favorite Lost actors. Penny and Charlie? Yep, I'll watch. Exhibit C: There's heart in the chaos. Even when it doesn't make complete sense, and plot holes threaten on the horizon, we care about Penny and Shakespeare (poor Joseph can't escape that role), desperate to understand and rewrite their futures.

Did anyone catch it? What do you think? Will you let FlashForward be your Lost-replacement option? Or, like me, do you need to see a couple more episodes before you make such a commitment?

Lost is dead... gone for ever. If you measure up every tv show to it, you might end up missing out on interesting tv shows
