Which Lost Characters are the Presidential Candidates?

I had this idea for a post a couple of weeks ago, but immediately dismissed it: surely Obama, McCain, Palin, and Biden wouldn't match up to any character on Lost enough to make any interesting or amusing comparisons. Plus, it would undoubtedly come off as biased.

But I kept thinking about it, and I slowly realized there were way more similarities than I initially thought. Too many to ignore...

SARAH PALIN is... NIKKI

Let's see. Nikki appeared rather late in Lost's overall story arc. The first impressions of her were (A) where the heck did she come from? And (B) hey, she's kind of hot. Sound familiar?

People quickly soured on Nikki, though, kind of like a certain vice presidential candidate. She didn't seem to belong on the show. And when her backstory was finally told, it was revealed that she had a history of getting by on her looks and backstabbing people. Interesting.

JOE BIDEN is... FRANK

They're both about the same age, both happy to play support, and both tend to speak their mind at the risk of a lack of eloquence. But I'll be honest -- Biden's my weak link in terms of matching him up to a Lost character. He had to take care of his two sons after their mother died before her time -- kind of like Michael taking care of Walt, but the similarities end there. He's an insider who has foreign policy experience -- like Ben? Not really. Frank's the most reasonable choice, although we barely know any of his backstory yet.

JOHN McCAIN is... LOCKE

Let's just come out and say it: Locke was always the maverick of Lost. When Jack was making speeches about living together or dying alone, Locke was off doing his own thing: fighting against congressional earmarks, er, I mean, trying to open the hatch. He was the friendly old guy, but he was also the cool outsider.

But then something happened in Season 4: as soon as he actually started trying to be a leader himself, he was bad at it and turned into a total jerk. Weird how that can happen to some people.

BARACK OBAMA is... SAYID

Why not Jack? He makes great speeches, is a natural leader, and, in the Lost narrative, is continually at odds with Locke, a.k.a. McCain.

But I think Sayid's an even better choice. People think he's a Muslim, for one thing (although in Sayid's case, it happens to be true). Sayid has also had questions raised about associations with terrorists in his past. But mostly, Sayid's the voice of reason -- whenever Jack or Locke get a little too bullheaded, Sayid keeps his cool and always gives a measured answer.

Plus, remember that time on the campaign trail when Obama snapped a guy's neck with his hands tied behind his back? That was awesome...
