My post on the long line of failed Lost copycats is two months old already, and I've just stumbled across an article on TV Week that previews a bunch of new hopefuls.
The main, blatantly obvious example mentioned is Harper's Island - a potential CBS midseason drama which "features one member of a group getting killed off violently each week." You can check out the trailer here, which boasts oh-so-familiar lines like "no one leaves the island unless I say so." Wikipedia says it was pitched as Scream meets 10 Little Indians; how about Survivor meets Lost?
The article also mentions Life on Mars and Fringe for their mystery/sci-fi elements, although I'd say Fringe is much closer to an X-Files rip-off. I mean, yeah, it looks cool, but it's about a team investigating paranormal occurrences and features a vast conspiracy. Hmm...
The article eventually delves into how it's impossible to predict whether a show will hit or not, with one commentator pointing out, "the success of Grey's Anatomy does not mean anyone wants another medical show." That's very true, but he should have specified that nobody wanted another medical show before Grey's Anatomy, either. Nobody knows what they want. No studio wanted E.T. because research showed nobody would go see a movie about a pet alien. So who knows, maybe Harper's Island will be the next smash...
