Theory of the Day: Nadia's Toast

This one's a short and sweet follow-up to yesterday's musings on the end of Season 4. Once they get off the island, what are some of the Season 5 events we can look forward to?

The biggest clue we have is the loaded flash-forward conversation between Sayid and Ben at the end of "The Economist." Let's check it out again:

BEN: These people don't deserve our sympathies. Need I remind you what they did the last time you thought with your heart instead of your gun?
SAYID: You used that to recruit me into killing for you.

BEN: Do you want to protect your friends or not, Sayid?

These three lines speak volumes. Here's how I see it shaking down: upon returning to civilization, Sayid immediately tracks down his true love Nadia and this time, finds her. They live happily ever after - except that a Widmore crony, tracking Sayid down, accidentally (or not) kills Nadia instead. (Another interpretation could be that Nadia herself is aligned with Widmore, although that seems like a stretch to me.)

Ben's on the scene so quickly that hey, he could've set the entire thing up with the intention of coercing Sayid into working for him, and does just that: convinces our favorite torturer that Widmore will be after the rest of the Oceanic Six, too, and the only way to protect them is to hunt down Widmore's team one by one.

If I'm right that the Oceanic Six are off the island during the entirety of Season 5, it provides quite a big narrative challenge for the writers. Not only do the islanders and Oceanic Six have no contact with each other, the Oceanic Six stories have to work around the flash-forwards that have already been told. There are plenty of dramatic opportunities for Sayid's little assassin quests, but we don't know much about what's in store for the others. Kate and Sun are raising children, Hurley's wigging out, and Jack's starting his downward spiral. It'll be interesting to see what else the writers cook up for them.
