The Story of Jacob

As season 3 ended and season 4 began, we began to see what life is like after an island rescue. Now we know there's 6 who made it off: Jack, Kate, Hurley, and three others. Right now it's tough to say who the other 3 are but I think one will be Sun. Why? Because of Jacob.

Honestly, we don't know a lot about this character Jacob. We've been told by Ben that he is the one Ben takes orders from. Jacob is mysterious and seems to be held in a shack on the island. We don't know if he's there by choice or he's held there. When Ben took Locke to visit Jacob, Locke heard Jacob say "Help me". For that, Ben left Locke for dead.

Now we're getting hints that Jacob could be Jack's father. Or at least Christian Shepherd is linked to Jacob somehow. And don't forget how Ben tried to brainwash Carl with images including, let's say "positive reinforcement" that Jacob is good.

So what gives? Well, I don't know. But here's my latest theory:

Jacob is some sort of old being or spirit of the island. Peaceful. Benevolent. And either a shape-shifter or controller of things humanly impossible. Jacob's chosen people are the natives that are currently lead by Alpert. They lived a quiet, nice life under the protection of a strange and powerful magnetic field.

One day the Dharma group came to the island to study. Maybe Jacob hid in the shack then, I don't know. But he didn't like Dharma there. One day Ben decides to overthrow Dharma and partner with Alpert's people. They let him in exchange for following Ben's leadership. Jacob communicates with Ben almost as if he's now the chosen one to release the island from the outside.

But there's a problem. No new natural life is coming to the island in way of births. Ben sends Alpert to get Juliet to figure out why. Jacob isn't liking this.

Then the outside reappears on Oceanic 815. At that time, Ben goes nuts. He's paranoid and aggressive. Jacob isn't happy again so he begins to communicate with Locke and Ben now is starting to realize that Ben has been demoted.

Off the island in the future, the Oceanic 6 are starting to want to get back to the island. So the question is, of course, "what happened"? I dunno. But this is so interesting that the off-island story is becoming just as, if not more, interesting than the on-island story. And it's my guess that Jacob didn't like how the Oceanic 6 got off the island. Things aren't resolved for Jacob. And he's the one trying to get them back.
