The 20 Biggest Mysteries (Decided by the Fans)

A few months ago, Entertainment Weekly's Jeff Jensen asked readers to send them their top three Lost mysteries that they want solved. He finally got through them all and recently released the top 15. So, from least votes to most votes, drum roll please, here they are:

15. What are the Whispers?
14. What's Libby's backstory?
13. What's the complete Dharma backstory?
12. Where did the Others come from?
11. Do all the castaways have a secret connection?
10. Who are Adam and Eve?
9. What's the significance of the Numbers?
8. Why are there Egyptian ruins on the island?
7. Where are stewardess Cindy and the kids?
6. What is the island, anyway?
5. What happened to Claire?
4. What was up with Walt?
3. What is the Monster?
2. Who is Jacob?
1. Why doesn't Richard Alpert age?

Look, for me, #1 has already been answered. In the season finale, he told Locke that he was that way because of Jacob. Richard Alpert doesn't age because Jacob made it so. Obviously, it would help if we got a few details on that matter, but my guess is that when #2 is answered, it will clear up any questions you have about #1.

I've always considered #11 -- the secret connections among the castaways -- to be more of a thematic choice than an actual mystery. Everybody's connected in ways they don't realize, and that's that. It's the whole six degrees of separation idea. Of course, now that we know Jacob visited them all, this might actually turn into something.

And as previously noted, we'll find out what happened to Claire pretty early on in the season.

When I submitted my own three choices to the open-ended poll, I decided that the most important mysteries were the ones that the series had introduced in Season 1. So my choices were: what are the whispers; what is the Monster; and who are the Others. I'm glad to see they all made the list.

I'm also impressed with the high ranking of Cindy and the kids. The show has clearly seem to forgotten about them, but I'm glad the fans haven't.
