You'd think Locke would learn by now: if you talk to Ben, he's going to try to manipulate you and point out your weaknesses. But the guy just doesn't get it, which is why the opening sequence of last night's Lost ended with Terry O'Quinn smashing a plate of eggs against the wall out of frustration. It was a pretty unnecessary scene that served only to drive the point home that Locke isn't that great a leader - and I think it's safe to say that's something we understand by now.
But the scene did have eggs in it. And it did take place in a sorta-kinda town (although with all the roommates and visitations going on, it felt amusingly like a dorm hall). Thus, the episode was called..."Eggtown"...?
It was a Kate episode, something we haven't gotten in quite a while, and it served to answer a few big question: (A) did Sawyer impregnate her, (B) why wasn't Kate in jail in the Season 3 finale, and (C) who was the "he" that she needed to go home to? I had theorized earlier that (B) was because she snuck her way off the island and wasn't an official Oceanic 6er, and general wisdom assumed (C) was Sawyer, but it turns out we were all wrong: she legally dodged a jail sentence (thanks to some courtroom scenes that my law-student girlfriend assured me were riddled with inaccuracies), and the "he" was Aaron, Claire's baby.
In true Lost fashion, this just served to create more delicious questions, namely: What the heck happened to Claire? Her chances of survival, I've got to say, do not look too good, but remember: as per Desmond's premonition, at some point in the future she has to get on a helicopter with Aaron.
Of course the episode also bombarded us with more bombshells. On the witness stand in Kate's flashforward, Jack explicitly stated the lie that the Oceanic 6 have been carrying around with them: the plane crashed in the water, there were only eight survivors, Kate pretty much rescued them all, and two of them died. In other words, they're not just switching some facts around - they're not telling anybody even a little bit of what really happened. (This was hinted at in the season premiere, when Hurley said he'd "never met" Ana-Lucia.)
But hold on. Conventional wisdom says that Aaron would be considered one of the Oceanic 6, right? Well if there were only eight survivors...and two of them died on the island...and then Aaron was born on the island...that makes seven. Right? So are we looking at one more Oceanic 6er, or two? (Based on this episode's "where should we live" conversation, I'm guessing it's Sun and Jin. That would also allow the show to follow up on the long-forgotten plot strand of Jin trying to quit working for his boss/Sun's dad.)
I'm also curious, in the 6's version of the story, who the two on-island casualties were.
The other big plot point was the Miles/Ben meeting, in which Miles revealed (surprise surprise) that he's not above a little bribery. For 3.2 million dollars, he'll tell his bosses that Ben's dead. Ben - aside from asking the obvious "why not 3.3 million or 3.4 million?" - actually seemed receptive to the idea, as long as he had a week to figure out how to get a hold of the money. Interesting. Not only does it mean we should see some major Ben action soon, it also hints at a complicated Miles backstory - like why, again, did he ask for exactly 3.2 million dollars? It's true that Miles is the showiest role of the Freighter Folk, but actor Ken Leung is still doing a great job making him fun to watch.
Other plot strands: the helicopter didn't make it to the freighter, which we'll find out all about next week in what looks to be another way-trippy Desmond episode. Daniel - who hopefully has more to do soon - and Charlotte practiced their card counting skills (either that or they were performing another cryptic time travel experiment, whichever). And oh yeah, furthering the point that Jack, while control-freakish, is a much better leader, Locke shoved a grenade in Miles's mouth and pulled the pin - if Miles opens his mouth a little wider, boom. When did Locke become such a jerk?
