With the whole "OMG Kate is pretending Aaron's her son!" surprise at the end of last week's episode, I somehow managed to forget a giant piece of the Lost puzzle: that Claire originally put Aaron up for adoption anyway. And yep, there's more. (Thanks to a close friend and fellow fervent fan for pointing this out.)
The time frame: season one. The tenth episode. On the island, things end with Claire and Charlie being abducted by Ethan. In Claire's flashbacks, she goes to see a psychic after deciding to give up the baby. The psychic tells her in no uncertain terms that she must raise the child by herself, because, according to Lostpedia, "her goodness must influence her baby's development." (I couldn't find the exact quote and I don't have the DVD with me.)
At the end of the episode, fearing that she'll give the baby up anyway, the psychic books her a ticket on Oceanic 815 and tells her there's a very nice couple in the U.S. who want to adopt the baby. Claire realizes that he knew the plane was going to crash - the implication is that he booked the flight as insurance that she'd have to raise the baby herself.
You could argue that he might have known Kate would end up raising Aaron, but frankly, three years ago I don't think the writers had that detail figured out yet, and besides, the psychic obviously can't see the entire future if he was worried about Claire giving the baby up in the first place. The bottom line: Claire has to raise Aaron by herself or there may be dire consequences. And now Kate (who, in contrast to Claire's "goodness," is a cold-blooded murderer) is raising him. Something to chew on, for sure.
