New Character & a New Actor to Play Him

john-hawkes-2.jpgMichael Ausiello broke the news earlier this month that Lost producers were hunting for an actor to play a recurring character who fits this description:

Lennon: Scruffy, edgy, charismatic, and slightly stir-crazy, Lennon can be deferential when it’s called for. He’s the spokesperson / translator for the president of a foreign corporation. He’s a wily negotiator, and far more powerful than his lowly position would seem to indicate. Recurring.

Only a day later, it was revealed that they had found him: John Hawkes, a veteran TV and supporting film actor who's appeared recently in everything from Identity to Deadwood to American Gangster to Eastbound & Down.

john-hawkes.jpgHe looks a little bit like D.J. Qualls, which is a little funny since D.J. Qualls also appeared in an episode of Lost as Hurley's buddy.

The role sounds a little bit like Richard, or at least our first impression of Richard, back when we saw him recruiting Juliet to join the Others. He can also be deferential when called for, and he's also far more powerful than originally indicated.

So what's the "foreign corporation"? I wouldn't read too deeply into this part. The goal of these casting calls is to give actors a good idea of the character without giving much away about the plot. So the corporation could be anything from a real company (Mr. Paik's? Widmore's?) to a secret society (Ilana's Shadow of the Statue cult) to something that hasn't been introduced yet. A group of Egyptian gods? Why not?
