Muy baby's seeeeeck! (Say it out loud)

If I wrote that title right, you should be envisioning a hysteric Claire whining about Aaron. Funny, right? Right? Aw, you guys suck.

Anyway I received a theory today linking Lost's fatal pregnancy problem to the island's weird healing abilities, and it sounds pretty logical. The gist is this: women die in the second trimester because the island doesn't recognize the fetus, instead treating it as a malignant growth. The body then attempts to fight off the malignancy - to "cure" it in much the same way Rose's cancer disappeared and Locke regained his legs - and the baby fights back, resulting in the death of both the mother and baby.

If you go for this, which I'm inclined to do, the big question is why the island doesn't recognize the fetus for what it is. My theorist suggests it's because time is "funny" on the island and the baby progresses too fast or too slow, but in Juliet's cases, every pregnancy progressed the same way. She also discovered that the problem only occurs when the baby is conceived on the island - fetuses conceived off-island do fine. So maybe the electromagnetic field or wormhole surrounding the island causes it to not "notice" conception? (If it's not painfully obvious already, medically speaking I have no clue what I'm talking about.)

Or could it be that the island itself sees children as a threat in that they're more mentally in tune, like Walt, with the island's mystical properties? That a bit too far in "out there" territory. Then again, so is an invisible man who whispers "help me."
