We've already had a bit of an introduction to the other others, but I thought we'd get to know Rebecca/Charlotte a little better as we await Thursday's "The Economist." There's nothing like a Valentine's spent with your favorite Oceanic 815 survivors....
E! Online interviewed Rebecca recently about the casting process, the color of her hair (Love the Witches of Eastwick reference. And weren't the three women all vying for a Jack [Nicholson] in that movie too?), and revealing a few mild spoilers in the process (like she probably won't die Thursday night).
What does Charlotte's specialty, anthropology, have to do with the Island? Well, the team that I'm in, we have all these different qualities and specialties that makes us this freaky group of intelligent, scary people. The character of Charlotte is interesting because not only is she fiercely intelligent but very tough and very physical. She's sort of an adventurer-archaeologist type like Indiana Jones.
Yes, exactly! In fact, that's what they said when I went in, that she's like a female Indiana Jones, so I made sure to flex my muscles during the audition scene, so they knew I could do it! I work out!
Does Charlotte know what she's getting into by crashing on that Island?
I don't think so. Well, I think she understands it academically, in a serious way, but there's that moment when she falls in the water and then comes back up, and she's like, "Wow, I made it. It's gorgeous. This is paradise!" That's such an exhilarating high for her, and then, boom—there's Locke.Miles is a ghostbuster who seems to have powers. Does Charlotte have any special abilities like that?
I don't know yet, but my mom Googled me the other day, and she said, "I think you might have powers." And I'm like, really?! There's rumors going around, but I truly don't know yet.
For the whole article, read here.
Personally, I'm already a fan of the Freighter Four. Way better than the Tailies. (Was I the only one hoping they would all just die already?) Maybe I should send fan mail to the casting directors.
Oh, and for those of you intrigued/excited by the C.S. Lewis reference in her character's initials, you're not alone. Perhaps the island is a tropical Narnia? The folks at Entertainment Weekly certainly are beginning to speculate:
I am utterly convinced Charlotte Staples Lewis has been to the Island before. Maybe it was her giggly delight as she splashed about in the Island's inland waters. True, the would-be freighter savior (or devil) could have been celebrating the mere fact that she had survived her harrowing arrival. But there was something more to her reaction — something that reminded me of another fantastical tale about an enchanted homecoming. The book is Prince Caspian, by C.S. Lewis, the sequel to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The story starts with a chapter called ''The Island,'' in which the Pevensie kids return to Narnia via a mysterious island marked by ancient ruins and odd creatures. First thing they do: play in the water. Maybe I'm just fishing again. But if you think I'm wrong, then you owe me a better explanation why Charlotte Staples Lewis has been assigned a name so conspicuously similar to the author's unfurled handle, Clive Staples Lewis.
Television encourages reading. Who knew?
