Me vs. Lost: Via Domus (Part 1)

Lost-Via-Domus-Elliot-Kate.jpgI got a copy of the Lost video game, Lost: Via Domus, last week. Sure, I wrote up an article earlier on how it was getting bad reviews and would only be entertaining to die-hard fans, but then I realized I was a die-hard fan. So I grabbed the PC version on my way home from work.

One minor concern: my computer is not exactly the sharpest gaming machine in the shed. Sure, I got 2 gigs of RAM and 200 gigs of space, but it's a laptop, and I don't even have a real video card, just some integrated Intel thingy. But hey, I can run The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on its low settings without a problem, so it'll be fine, right?

I slide in the disc and go through the arduous but typical installation. Finally the "install" option magically turns into the "play" option, and I start getting pumped.

The first thing I'm presented with is a cutscene of...Elliott, the character I'll be controlling, on Oceanic 815, mid-flight. The graphics, I've gotta say, are really nice. He turns around, sees a really ominous dude looking at him - is he from Hanso? Widmore? Dharma? Suddenly we hit massive turbulence and people start flying all over the place! The plane cracks! People go flying! The screen goes black! The familiar "LOST" title comes and goes! The screen goes black again!

...and stays black. For a while. That's cool, it's just loading another--

Oops. The game crashed. I get some Vista message about something recovering from a fatal error. It's probably fixable, but it means I'll have to troll around message boards to see if anybody had the same problem as me, and then see if they ever fixed it. Hmm. I decide to call it a day.

Thus concludes the first of a series of posts on my experience with Lost: Via Domus. Unless I lose all motivation or deem the game unfixable. Then...there might not be a Part 2.
