May Have Spotted a Logic Error

Ben-Shocked.jpgI have a friend who's a huge Alex fan. Now, I'm a big Alex fan - I named her the #1 girl to get stuck on the Lost island with - but he loves Alex at least twice as much as I do.

As you can imagine, he's taking her death quite hard. While I reacted to it with denial, he apparently jumped right over that stage of grief into anger. He told me, and I quote:

Ben (who you are wrong, is pretty much entirely responsible) tells her that everything will be alright and then just lets her get blasted. Disgusting. If he knew what kind of man that freighter guy was then he knew that he would do it. [...] He's played the if-I-get-captured-then-everyone-dies card one two many times and I am more than sick of it.

I dismissed it as pure anger at first and still held that there was no way Ben could've saved her. But tonight I realized something: if Ben didn't think Keamy would shoot Alex, why does he think the freighter folks would kill everyone once they have him in custody? Why would it be "against the rules" to shoot one person but totally be allowed to kill everyone?

I'm pretty sure it's just a logic gap in the writing. Ben clearly didn't think Keamy would pull the trigger - he was legitimately shocked when he did, and went to the trouble of visiting Widmore in the future just to explain exactly how shocked he was. (Not to mention calling up Smokey.) And the freighter folk clearly do have the moral capacity (or lack thereof, more accurately) to kill everyone.

But then again, trying to figure out whether this is just a logical error in the script or some kind of complicated Ben thing is giving me a massive headache. If anybody has any explanations to this little quirk that make sense, sound off.
