I Will Survive, too

Nadine's recent "I Will Survive" post pointed us to a good article on which Lost man would be the best to be stranded with. The ultimate conclusion was that there was no one better than Sayid, which I wholeheartedly agree with - no one else could assure your survival as much as this guy could. He snapped a guy's neck while his hands were tied behind his back, for Pete's sake.

Being a guy, though, I guess I'll take up the challenge to compare the women. Which one of the Lost girls would I rather be stranded with? To keep the list manageable, I'm not including the dearly departed, although if I was, honestly, I always had a thing for Shannon. The bitchiness was just a defense mechanism, and kind of endearing. Plus, anyone good enough for Sayid is good enough for me.

Kate

Pros: She made it as a fugitive for years before being caught. She's also a good tracker - of every castaway, she's second only to Locke. Not bad underwear, either.

Cons: She's a total loner, she'd stab you in the back to save herself, and she can't make up her mind between Jack and Sawyer to save her life. What's worse, she displayed some truly horrendous instincts in this past episode. "Sure, Charlotte, you hold onto a blunt object and stand right behind me as I bend over and rummage through this back you don't want me to look through."

Verdict: Too dangerous and too much of a wildcard.

Sun

Pros: Being bilingual is always a plus, I suppose. Has a rich daddy, although since this scenario is about being stuck on the island, that wouldn't help. Showed some solid chops as Jack's nurse? Now we're getting somewhere. And she would plant food.

Cons: Well, the pregnancy thing would slow you down. Plus, she's a borderline-pathological liar, according to the Season 3 episode "The Glass Ballerina."

Verdict: She'd keep me healthy but would be no use against any kind of danger.

Claire

Pros: She's gorgeous - yeah, better than Kate. Living out that whole "stranded on an island with a beautiful woman" fantasy would be a lot of fun.

Cons: It's a two-for-one deal, if Kate hasn't stolen Aaron yet. Plus, c'mon, she believes in psychics. (Course, on Lost, that might be a pro.) Not too handy in the "survival" department.

Verdict: Great on a deserted island. Not so much the Lost island.

Rousseau:

Pros: She's survived for sixteen years on her wits. Strong, quiet, smart, capable.

Cons: She's a little nutty. Not against stealing babies, either. Only attractive in a crazy-lady-who's-way-too-old -for-me kind of way.

Verdict: I'd be safe, but it wouldn't be that much fun.

Alex

Pros: She knows the Others inside and out. She's loyal and a little bit of a romantic (although in this scenario we're pretending Karl doesn't exist.) Single-handedly rescued Claire from a potentially fatal Other-led C-section. Knows basic survival skills.

Cons: Early in Season 3, her idea of an attack on the others was to use a slingshot. Has major mother/father issues.

Verdict: Not bad at all. Okay, she's 16, but the actress playing her is 20, which makes it way more age-appropriate.

Juliet

Pros: Knows the Others almost as well as Alex. Very smart doctor. She's got the survival thing down - athletic and willing to shoot you.

Cons: Untrustworthy. That faux-sympathetic conceited expression would get old very quickly.

Verdict: Frankly, Juliet terrifies me.

Well, there's no clear-cut winner here like Sayid - although if Penny wasn't disqualified by not actually being on the island, she'd totally be a favorite. (By the way, Rose is too old, and I'd have way too many trust issues with Charlotte.) I'm tempted to say Claire, but let's face it, we'd die in about five minutes. The trick is to balance attractiveness with survival skills, so I guess I'll go with Alex - she's great-looking, resourceful, driven, and most likely wouldn't stab me in the back.
