Last week's episode "Namaste," as I explained in my recap, was a "Point A to Point B" episode -- rather than tell one character's story, it was designed to move everybody around to all the right places and set up a bunch of stuff for future episodes. Everybody was going somewhere: Kate, Jack, and Hurley to Dharmaville; Sayid to captivity; Sun and Lapidus to the main island.
While those episodes are necessary, the problem is that they're more plot driven than character driven; prior to "Namaste," we had a string of great episodes focusing on Jack, Locke, and Sawyer, respectively. (Jeff Jensen and Dan Snierson echo this point in their new episode of "Totally Lost"; check it out.) The great thing about tonight's episode, "He's Our You" is that by every indication it looks like a return to episodes focusing on one character. That that character is Sayid this time is just gravy.
Sayid had plenty of screen time in "Namaste," but there's a lot left out of his story. We have no idea what he's thinking. The last time we really knew, he was building houses outside the country when Locke went to visit him. Since then, he was somehow picked up by Ilana. Why were they traveling to Guam? Did he have an idea that he'd end up on the island? Now that he's back, what does he want? Let's hope this episode answers all of those questions.
What do we know so far? Spoilers ahead.
According to the sneak peek clips I just posted:
-Young Ben makes Sayid a proposition, in the process revealing that his encounter with Richard -- seen in Season 3's "The Man Behind the Curtain" -- took place four years ago, in 1973, one year before Sawyer and co. showed up.
-Sawyer offers Sayid a way out of prison, which Sayid refuses. Might Sayid's faux persona as a member of the Hostiles lead him to actually become a member of the Hostiles?
-"He's our you" is what Sawyer says to Sayid after bringing him to a Dharma eccentric who lives in a tepee.
And according to the teases provided in "Totally Lost":
-Sayid may meet Ilana in a bar, who may arrest him there.
-"Chickens and chicken salad play a prominent role."
-"Hurley saw it coming." They tease that "it" is the Purge. Might Hurley have a conversation with Young Ben? Or what if he sees something else? Like the Smoke Monster?
See you tonight...
