EW Has Seen the Season Premiere

Entertainment Weekly's leading Lost expert Jeff "Doc" Jensen has been sent the first two episodes of the fifth season (both of which will air on January 21st), just because he's some fancy-schmancy TV critic. Hey ABC! We professionally write about Lost, too! Send 'em over!

You can read Jensen's full article here, but it's essentially a six-paragraph tease. The meat of the piece:

Lost’s tradition of opening the year with a killer, capture-the-imagination sequence is honored and upheld, though the thing I loved most was how it was brazenly frank (and engagingly funny) about the heady high-concept conceit that will define the season. Almost everything that followed that opening passage was pretty cool, too. Remember the non-linear structure of Pulp Fiction, which toggled between a number of storylines whose chronological relationship to each other is practically a puzzle for the audience to solve? Well, the season premiere is kinda like that. The first two episodes will have the audience — and the show’s characters — trying to make sense of shifts in time. They demand active engagement, and I found it to be a lot of fun. Especially the first hour.

I think by this point, after the teases from Lindelof & Cuse and the set reports from spies and everything else and now this, it's safe to say that the island travels back in time this season. But how will that work? Jensen seems to be hinting that it's not traveling to one set point but, perhaps, gradually backwards. I imagine this is extremely tricky to pull off, but it sounds like they've done it. Hopefully.

Jensen also reveals:

-Sayid spends an entire episode sleeping. (Or knocked out cold?)

-Expect to see lots of Sawyer, Hurley, and Faraday.

-A "polarizing figure" makes a cameo and delivers the best line of the episodes. Judging from prior reports, that would be Michelle Rodriguez's Ana-Lucia.
