E!'s Kristen has a great new Lost column out that features a revealing interview with Dominic Monaghan concerning the late, great Charlie.
First things first: the rumor that Christian Shephard can be seen in the Fray/Lost music video/promo (follow the link and look closely at 2:10) is false. According to Lindelof himself: "John Terry is gonna be in the show this season, but he was definitely nowhere near Hawaii when we shot that stuff."
As for Charlie, apparently Monaghan and Lindelof had lunch together recently and talked about if and how Charlie could re-appear:
As we were paying the bill, I said, 'Let's talk about Charlie.' And we had a five-minute, very accelerated conversation where I said, this is how I would feel about coming back. These are the things that I really like about Charlie and ideas for Charlie. And Damon said, 'OK, that's great. I'll go away and I'll chew on that.' Damon has to deal with not only the arc in the story for the entire show but also all the characters. He might not have space for me to come back, but if there is space, then we talked about how it would work.
Charlie already has come back, remember -- he's currently haunting Hurley, and we saw him for ourselves in the first episode of Season 4. I'm glad his appearance in that capacity was only restricted to one episode -- an arc in which Monaghan just follows Hurley around would be a little bit lame and probably denigrating to his memory. However, I'd be very up for him making some kind of on-island reappearance in the manner of Christian or Claire.
(By the way, Kristen says that "inside sources" tell her Claire won't be a Season 5 regular but will be back. That's not a secret -- Emilie de Ravin's on a holding contract and will be back as a regular in Season 6.)
At the time of Charlie's death, I remember Monaghan seeming slightly (and understandably) bitter about having to leave the show. He does, however, realize that his departure was handled a lot better than some of the others:
I'd always been very complimentary toward Damon's writing in [Charlie's death scene], in the sense that he really gave Charlie a great preciousness and dealt with him with dignity, you know. I think other people have died in ways that maybe weren't quite as dignified. Charlie was really taken care of and I really appreciated that.
He also cautions that he'd only return if the writing were up to par to those moments:
Really, if [the return were] not something as precious as Charlie's arc in his death, then I might not do it. I wouldn't come back for just a little hello in the background. It would have to be an interesting story, an interesting arc. Something that really moves the story."
From the way Monaghan is talking hypothetically, don't expect Charlie to appear anytime soon. But given Lost's penchant for having dead characters return, it seems like there's a decent chance of an appearance in Season 6.
