Cuse at Shanghai Television Festival

Last month, America's top television writers showed up at the 14th annual Shanghai Television Festival to share their episodic adventures with their Chinese counterparts. They discussed everything from story structure and character creation to the editing process and casting.

And you can't have a who's who of TV pros without some Lost representation.

Writer/executive producer Carlton Cuse attributed the success of "Lost" to early low expectations that allowed his team to risk writing complex stories that included unsympathetic characters in an unusually large cast.

So today I'm thankful for low expectations. And the unsympathetic characters are what makes the viewing experience so gut-wrenching. Because I'm constantly torn. Even the good guys are so severely flawed that I can't consistently root for the same character.

Good work, Cuse. Just don't give away all your secrets....
