Catching Up with FlashForward

At Nadine's recommendation (and my mom's) I tuned into the second episode of FlashForward last night, curious to see if it could turn into a Lost-style obsession.

Overall, I liked it. Some thoughts:

-They're admirably creative with the way they've set up some of the flash-forwards. For example, Olivia (Sonya Walger, Penny from Lost) saw in her's that she was with another man who wasn't her husband. She met the man in last night's episode, but realized that in the flash-forward, he had never looked at her -- so she knows but he doesn't. Interesting.

-It was also confirmed that Demetri (John Cho, from Star Trek) didn't see anything in his flash-forward because he gets murdered a month beforehand (if the mysterious woman played by Shohreh Aghdashloo is to be believed). That sets up a great hook: will they really kill off their second-billed actor, or will the future be changed?

-Joseph Fiennes is a good-looking guy and by most accounts a great actor -- in movies. But he's the worst part of the show for me. He's just not selling it. He's playing his role like a bad Jack Bauer impersonator. Everything's a gruff, dramatic whisper.

-I understand that this is an L.A. production that doesn't have an unlimited budget. But I hope the show acknowledges that a group of Los Angeles FBI agents is probably not the only group in the world to be investigating what was a global phenomenon.

-We're only two episodes in, but there are two main things that are stopping FlashForward from being the next Lost: an exotic location, which can't be helped, and a lack of focus on the characters, which can be. Everything has been extremely plot-driven so far. Let's find out more about these people so we can care more about the worldwide-conspiracy angle.

-Where's Dominic Monaghan?

So far, the episodes have both nabbed over 10 million viewers, which makes it likely (at this point) that we'll at least get a full season's worth of episodes. I'm looking forward to finding out what kind of show FlashForward turns out to be.
