Another Take: "There's No Place Like Home," Pt. 1

I'm gonna have to give Hugo's mother the award for best line of the night: "Jesus Christ is not a weapon." I laughed. Out loud.

Perhaps because last night's episode was really just setting us up for the monster (as in "smoke monster"?) of all finales, something felt amiss. I mean, sure, it was a stellar, solid production (I agree with Michael that Holloway's acting was quite moving), but there were none of the reveals, twists, or heart-wrenching moments that I've come to expect this season. We seemed to encounter an awkward plot point, with characters learning shocking truths that we already knew thanks to our flashback insights. Jack's reaction to learning that Claire is his sister was Emmy-worthy, but it was old news to us. The shock factor was missing. I should have cried. Or gasped. Instead, nothing.

The one uncomfortable and unpredictable moment was to see Sun acting out of bitterness. Revenge. Hatred, possibly. To me, she's always been above all that. But perhaps that will be part of her post-island deterioration. We know Hurley goes mad, Jack is suicidal, Kate is desperately alone (and possibly haunted by divided loyalties and dishonest motherhood), Sayid is shattered, and Aaron is secretly motherless. So Sun needs to be severely messed up as well (apart from her Jin separation. And no, I don't believe he's dead).

The Oceanic 6 didn't look super-thrilled to be arriving on the mainland. And they're covering up a lot. Perhaps having to live a lie is what eats away at them all. The big questions remain: What are they not saying? What so desperately needs covering up? And why did some stay?

And maybe this is just a question bugging me: Since when can Kate identify tracks and footprints? If I saw a dent in the jungle floor, I wouldn't be able to distinguish between an Other or a Lostie. Unless it was labeled neatly.

So now I'm just hanging on for the two-hour life-changing event in two weeks. I'll be processing more of what I saw last night in the coming week or so. Oddly, Lost wasn't really water-cooler gossip today. I guess the episode just didn't resonate the way some of the others have. The score during the final montage, however, was gorgeous. Get me the soundtrack!
