Another New Cast Member: Hiroyuki Sanada

Lost producers just cast John Hawkes in an ambiguous role known as "Lennon", but no sooner had the deal wrapped up when another new cast member was announced: Hiroyuki Sanada, a veteran Japanese actor who has appeared in Speed Racer, Rush Hour 3, The Last Samurai, and the woefully underrated Sunshine.

Aside from knowing that it's a "significant recurring role," nobody knows anything about the part -- unfortunately, there were no neat little character descriptions like they had for Lennon. Sanada tends to play villains, but in my opinion -- and this is obviously total conjecture -- that just means Lost scored him to play a good guy.

Jeff Jensen's own prediction:

He will play a mystical mystery man who serves as John Locke’s Obi-Wan-meets-Mr. Miyagi in the post-Jughead rebooted Lost timeline. Attuned to The Island’s magic — perhaps an embodiment of The Island itself — Hiroyuki’s character will help the amnesiac Locke rediscover his destiny to become The Island knight/protector and guide him back, even as dark forces conspire to stop Locke and the rest of the castaways from going back.

Not doing it for me. That theory suggests Season 6 will jump into the alternate reality that the bomb created and start another "bring all the castaways back to the island" story. Considering the whole "We have to go back!" storyline took up much of the fourth and fifth seasons, I doubt they'd kick the final season off with what would essentially be a retread of all that material.

They'll tease us with the alternate-reality timeline reboot, of course -- they already started -- but I doubt they'll keep it going for very long, and it won't be resolved by everybody getting on a plane again.

My guess is that Sanada's closely affiliated with either Jacob or the Second Man.
