I think LOST will go down as the best show ever. The reason is because this show has a way of changing the storyline over and over in a way that we care about it.
Most shows when they change it, we get upset or call out the "jump the shark" label.
Not LOST though.
Season 1 was about "how will they get off the island"?
Season 2 was about "forget getting off the island, what's the deal with the hatch and Dharma"?
Season 3 was about "forget Dharma, who are 'the others'"?
Season 4 is about "what happens to the ones who get off the island and the fate of the island"?
We go for long stretches of time not thinking about the things we were once curious about. We still are, but, for example, this season it became about how and who gets off and what's going on post-island? We saw smokey and it was cool, but almost less interesting compared to why Sayid is working for Ben off-island.
Of course there are consistent themes tying it all together and things we still care about, but the point is that I've never seen a show take so many different, logical directions and really keep us interested in the next turn, not as stuck on story of the past.
